MP Blasts Police

The New Patriotic Partys Member of Parliament for Kade, the twin constituency of Akwatia in the Kwaebibirem district of the Eastern region, Ofosu Asamoah, has expressed grave concern about the security situation at Akwatia and how police personnel have so far been 'unprofessional' in dealing with the situation. According to him, the curfew imposed in Akwatia is uncalled for since the police and the military have all the arsenal and professionalism to deal with the situation. According to him, if the police are not able to provide security for the elections to take place at the six polling stations, then there is no reason why they should still be in the police service. Hon. Ofosu Ampofo was speaking to the Daily Guide after the political violence at Akwatia on Sunday. We have run elections in over 22,000 polling stations across the country with the police providing security and if the police have suddenly become ineffective, then they should tell the political parties taking part in the elections to provide their own security for the elections, he noted. According to the MP, the clashes that erupted at Akwatia on Sunday should be blamed on the police, as they looked on since their arrival on Friday, for activists of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to harass supporters and sympathizers of the NPP at Akwatia. At a point, the NDC people led police and the military to raid Filadelfia hotel at Akwatia and GNAT guest house at Kade, where some officials of NPP from Accra are lodging, to beat them up under the guise of searching for arms. We want professional policing as the people of Akwatia go to the polls today so that they can elect their representative in parliament peacefully.
