EC Must Expunge Atta Mills, Aliu Mahama, Et Al From Register - Bernard Mornah

General Secretary for the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has proffered a panacea for the controversy surrounding the call on the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters’ register as Ghana prepares for the 2016 general elections.

Speaking at a public forum organized by the Coalition for the Defence of Equal Citizenship (CODEC) on the theme “Protecting the integrity of the biometric voters register,” Mr. Mornah asserted that the cost of compiling a new register was too expensive for the nation and could deprive some rural areas of good drinking water.

The PNC’s General Secretary believes the EC should rather consider expunging names of statesmen who have passed on to the next world rather than compiling a new one.

He claims the EC still has names such as Atta Mills, Aliu Mahama, P.V.Obeng, Gladys Asmah and Prof. Kofi Awoonor among others in their register as registered voters.

In his view, such a move would clean the current voters register which the New Patriotic Party sees as over bloated.

The NPP has, on several occasions, called the credibility of the current voters’ register into question, describing it as bloated and has constantly pushed for a review. The flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, appealed to the new Chairperson of the EC to give Ghana a fresh start by creating a new voters’ register.

A political pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance has already announced plans to embark on a series of actions aimed at forcing the electoral commission to come out with a new voters register for the 2016 election.

But Bernard Mornah is of the view that instead of ‘wasting’ money on compiling a new one, it would be prudent for government to channel those resources into other vital areas of the economy.
