The Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, has dismissed allegations that the municipal assembly is coercing residents to supply cement for the Amanfro Police Station project. He explained that the request was first made by the Amanfro Landowners Association to members of the assembly and some non-governmental organisations to support them to fast-track the project to enable the police to be posted to the area to stop armed robbery attacks on the residents. First batch Presenting 100 bags of cement valued GH�3,000 to Amanfrom Landowners Association last Wednesday, Mr Thompson urged landowners to not coerce residents to supply cement. He appealed to them to contribute voluntarily to the noble cause of fighting evildoers. The police service, he disclosed, had also donated another 100 bags of cement for the speedy completion of the two storey permanent police station at Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality to combat armed robberies in the area. He commended the Chief of Amanfro, Nii Akwashie Gborlor, for providing land for the police station. He appealed to the chief in the area and the landlords associations to emulate the example of the chief by contributing to their security since the police alone could not smoke out criminals from the communities if the people living with them failed to provide information and go the extra mile to ensure a crime-free community. Mr Daniel Addo, chairman of the Amanfro Resident landlords Association, commended Mr Isaac Amoh, a former MP for Ayawaso West Wougon who is a resident of Amanfro, for donating hundred bags of cement for the police project. He said the MP for Bortianor/Ngleshie Amanfro also voluntarily contributed 50 bags of cement. Background Mr Addo said this followed appeals from the residents to the Ga South Municipal Assembly and individuals to assist the community with the construction of a police post to deter armed robbers who daily visited mayhem on the residents, including raping women during such raids. He said the residents complained at a meeting with the security agencies and traditional rulers that all attempts to form a neighbourhood watch committee had failed because some residents had refused to contribute to support the watch committee members who patrolled the area at night. Widow�s mite Mr Thompson said he intervened during the meeting to appeal to the residents to contribute their widow�s mite to protect themselves while the assembly sourced for funds from its internally-generated funds (IGF)to complete the police station project. He said since the inception of the municipality in 2007, four police stations had been built by the assembly from its IGF at vantage points to protect lives and property, which had gone a long way to curb anti-social activities in the municipality. The MCE explained that with the influx of people from Accra to the municipality in recent times, the municipality would increase the number of police stations in the area with Kokrobitey and Amanfro being high on the agenda.
