Tension In Tinka Island Over Shooting Of Young Man

Tension is brewing at Tinka Island, an area notorious for illicit drug peddling in Kumasi, after a former Assembly Member for the Afia Kobi Electoral Area, Mr Kamel Deen Yakub, had shot and wounded a young man. But for the timely intervention of the Rapid Response Team of the Kumasi Police who rushed to whisk Yakub away, the youth would have unleashed instance justice on him. Victim The pump action gun fired by Yakub hit and wounded Sallawu Salla, a young man in his 20s. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Nyamekye Adane-Ameyaw, said on Saturday, Yakub organised a clean-up exercise where he ordered that the gutters in the area be fumigated. Fumigation He said a young man, whose name was given only as Mallam, insisted that he would not allow the gutter in front of his house to be fumigated because that would push all the mosquitoes into his house. The police said Mallam physically prevented the fumigators from spraying the gutters; a situation which attracted the attention of Yakub, who is contesting the seat again in the upcoming district assembly elections. Supt Adane-Ameyaw said in spite of the presence of the former assembly member, Mallam stood his ground, insisting that, he would not allow the gutters in front of his house to be fumigated. The disagreement led to exchange of words between the two. Feeling threatened, Yakub entered his vehicle and brought out a pump action gun which he used in firing two warning shots. The third shot hit Salla who was observing the scene. Distress call According to Supt Adane-Ameyaw, we received a distress call from Yakub that he was being attacked and within some few minutes, Yakub called again that he had shot somebody. He said the culprit handed himself over to the police who had been dispatched to the scene. The suspect has since been placed in police custody pending further investigations.
