GESTA Resolves Not To Pay TV Licence

Members of the Ghana Electronics Service Technicians Association (GESTA) in the Brong Ahafo Region have resolved that they would not pay the TV license being introduced. GESTA, which said paying the TV license amounts to double taxation, explained that people who bring their TVs to them for repairs would surely pay the license for their TV; therefore, there was no need for repairers to also pay. Members of GESTA also revealed that they were not consulted when the TV license bill was being drafted. The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of GESTA, Mr George Kwadwo Boadi, said it would be unfair to force repairers to pay the annual GH60 as TV license. He asked why they should pay the fee when the owners of the TV sets have already done so. In another development, the Brong Ahafo branch of the Ghana Tourism Federation said the proposed tariff increase is going to affect them greatly. Members of the association are calling on the VRA, GRIDCO and other utility providers to check the waste in the system instead of increasing tariffs. Members of the association noted that there is so much wastage in the system, which must be checked. They also blame the wastage on the type of meters they give to customers. Charles Adu-Gyamfi, the Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the Ghana Tourism Federation, said the utility providers have increased tariffs under the pretext that they would provide quality services, but it has been one story to another over the years.
