Winneba United In The R. C. Ekem Cup Final

Two teams, Winneba United and Sun City FC, have qualified to play in the grand finale of the R. C. Ekem cup. The six team competition which has been running for the last six weeks is in honor of Mr. R. C. Ekem, the Managing Director of Ekem Art Pottery Ltd, for his over 40 years generosity to the people of Winneba, and Ghana in general. In the semi-final matches played over the weekend, Sun City FC beat Gomoa Soccer for a Change by two goals to nil, while Winneba United, the host of the competition, won the other semi-final game by a lone goal. This coming Sunday, September 13, 2015, at 2pm, the grand finale of the competition, amidst pomp and pageantry, will take place at the usual venue, Winneba United park, Sankor, Winneba. The winner of the competition takes home a set of jerseys, GHC2,000, and the R. C. Ekem cup. There shall be several other prizes for the second and third place teams. There shall also be prizes for the goal-king, best players and goalkeepers of the tournament. You might not have heard the name R. C. Ekem. But that is exactly the reason why we are honoring this humble, generous, unsung man, and that is exactly the reason we are inviting you to grace this occasion, because this man has done great things, but is never known, never acknowledged, and never seek glory, and those are the people we wish to stand for. Permit me to quote one comment from a reader: R. C. Ekem was not one of the richest industrialists in Winneba, and for that matter in Ghana, and yet he made some people rich Reverend Dr. Kwame Ansong. He has touched many lives; carpenters, hairdressers, tailors, churches, associations, students, children, women, politicians, and the list can go on and on. Mr. Ekem gave me my first job after secondary school, which is the reason I was able to save to start a farming business. Its the reason why I was able to save to go to the university, and the reason why I was able to pay my mothers medical bills. Today he is officially on retirement, 74 years old. But he still works; he is still physically very strong and active, active at work, active in church, active with his grand children. He is still active with Full Gospel. But I imagine he is no longer able to give as much as he used to. He has paid his due. The R. C. Ekem cup is being sponsored by Run-Off Ltd, the operators of Run-Off restaurant located at Winneba Junction, Run-Off electronics, Run-Off construction, and supported by Challenging Heights. Several high profile individuals, including Nenyi Ghartey VI, the Omahen of the Effutu Traditional Area, Honorable Alex Markin, the MP for Effutu, and Mr. R. C. Ekem himself, have confirmed their attendance at the event. This Sunday all roads lead to the Winneba United park at Sankor, Winneba. Mr. Ekem, amongst all the ceramic vessels you made, was that which you made for yourself, and that is you to the world. Thank you for making yourself that vessel of use.
