Richard Quarshigah Faces Stiff Competition Over Keta Seat

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Keta, Richard Quarshigah, is set to face a fierce contest in his quest to retain the mandate of the party to serve the Keta Constituency as MP for the second time. Three persons have picked forms to contest against him in the November 7 parliamentary primaries as the party closes nominations on Thursday September 10. The three poised to give Mr. Quarshigah a good run for his money are Kofi Kokubour, Rocky Amudzi and Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey. Already, 40-year-old Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, who is a public health practitioner and communications specialist, is making inroads in his quest to unseat the incumbent. Mr. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey told Citi News Volta Regional Correspondent, Gratham Mackintosh, that he is concerned about uniting the constituency because according to him, the incumbent MP has divided the constituency. I contested with Quarshigah and he emerged as the winner. After that I promised myself that if he was able to deliver on the things that we wanted him to, I was not going to contest him. But the evidence on the ground shows that not much is happening and there is no unity on the ground. And without unity development does not thrive; so as a unifier, I want to stop that. According to Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, the expansion of the Electoral College places him ahead of the incumbent MP, who he said took advantage of the limited delegates during the last primaries. The parliamentary aspirant says he will strengthen the party in the constituency by establishing a welfare fund to support the grassroot party members to make them employable if he wins the primary and becomes the MP. Mr. Richard Quarshigah is a first time MP after he gave up his position as the Propaganda Secretary of the NDC to contest the Keta Constituency seat.
