Corruption At Ghanas EC Worse Than Judiciary

Chairman of pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), Dr Ayew Afriyie has claimed that corruption at Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) is worse than the one discovered by invesigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas in the Judiciary.

The NPP Parliamentary candidate for Efiduase-Asokore in the Ashanti Region speaking on Accra-based Oman FM said that his conviction is as a result of the that the Information Communication Technology (ICT) division of the election regulation body is now in bed with the EC.

“Can you imagine that in the villages, the NDC goes to the people, take their voters ID cards and record the ID card numbers, but yet return to the villagers with an NDC ID card with their names and pictures…how is that possible, they are making use of the data granted them by the IT department of the commission…,” he said.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie said that it is this conviction that is forcing his group, AFAG and Let My vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) to picket at the EC on 12th September to demand a new voters register.

He said the body has informed the police about their intention as required by the public order act and would carry out their intention to demand fairness in the voting process.

He further dared the National Security to first go and arrest persons who claimed that they were involved in getting Togolese register in Ghana to cast votes in 2012 elections before coming after them.

Dr. Afriyie further alleged that STL’s contract with the EC has ended but ‘some NDC under-hands have schemed to enable them get another contract,”

He therefore implored on the new EC Boss, Charlotte Osei to tackle the corruption at the outfit to regain the confidence of the public.
