NPP MP Spill The Beans

While Ghanaians are scandalized by recent corruption exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and are calling for collective effort in fighting the canker in Ghana, a loud mouth Member of Parliament of the opposition New Patriotic Party has also been making mind blowing confession to a bribery scandal involving the adb Initial Public Offer (IPOI) deal.

Far from singing like a canary bird, the first time legislator of the opposition NPP, who is also reported neck deep in a GH¢1million sleaze outrage, is threatening to expose all top executives of the opposition party involved in the deal.

A close confidant of the said MP (name withheld) told The aL-hAJJ that his boss “will not go down alone because this thing can ruin his life as MP and career. There are some senior members of the party who also benefited from the deal, and if those people sit down and watch him (the MP) go down; then all of them must go down.”

A voice on a tape recording currently circulating in the nation’s capital Accra, thought to be the voice of MP for Effutu, Alex Afenyo Markins, was heard demanding GH¢ 1 million from agents of business entities (with interest in adb IPO) to stop thwarting the listing of adb on the stock exchange, but this was declined.

Subsequently, Afenyo Markins, who is the lawyer for another NPP MP for New Juabeng South, Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah, went ahead to place an injunction on the IPO. It is being alleged GH¢250 thousand had already changed hands between the agents acting on behalf of persons with interest in adb offer and some high ranking members of the opposition NPP who were initially hell bent on stopping the deal.

Some allusions on the tape to the effect that “people have chopped and left us, we must also chop. We are tired…,” The aL-hAJJ intelligence has gathered, was in reference to some earlier payments made by the ‘agents’ to certain individuals in the camp of the opposition party. Among the names making the rounds include that of the NPP 2016 flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Minority ranking member on Finance, Anthony Akoto Osei and other top officials of the NPP.

A full version of the tape in possession of The aL-hAJJ have portions bordering on national security and ongoing dirty works in the house of legislature.

The NPP lawmaker at the center of this current scandal, according to our source close to him; “will not hesitate mentioning the names of his colleagues and other beneficiaries of the bribery to push through the bank’s IPO.

Following threats by the Minority in Parliament to sue management of adb over the IPO without Parliamentary approval and subsequent lawsuit by MP for New Juaben South, Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah over the same issue, some persons with interest in adb floatation, engaged an agent to negotiate with the minority who were delaying the transaction.

Intelligence report gathered by The aL-hAJJ indicates that the agents met with some of those involved at the residence of the brother of MP for Old Tafo, Anthony Akoto Osei. This meeting was after the minority, through its lawyer and MP for Effutu, Alex Afenyo Markin wrote to the management of adb asking them to seek Parliamentary approval for the bank’s IPO plans or face a court action.

To the keep the minority’s threat of going to court to block the process under wrap, sources familiar with the deal confided in The aL-hAJJ that the agents also pledged GH¢100 thousand cedis to the campaign of the 2016 flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Soon after these discussions, the minority, through Afenyo Markins, announced that it had suspended its initial attempts to sue adb over the IPO.

Giving reason for the suspension, Afenyo Markins stated “They gave us the assurance that they were going to come so for the time being, we should hold on; they’ve seen the sins in the issues we had raised. They didn’t put that in writing but I received a call and the Minority leader also received a call from a top person at adb so we acted on that.”

“Their consultant called me on a Sunday to assure me that they were going to come to Parliament so we should hold on with our writ. We can only expect that they do so as soon as possible.”
However, unknown to the Dr Assibey Yeboah that his colleagues have been “taken care of”, he also filed a suit in court to challenge adb’s decision to go ahead with the IPO without parliamentary approval.

Interestingly, Afenyo Markins, who acted as lawyers for the minority on the same matter but had to shelve their threat citing assurance from management of adb, filed the case on behalf of Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah.
