The former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Otchere Darko has heavily criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), describing it as a lazy institution.

He said this while commenting on the recent bribery scandal that has hit the Judicial Service.

According to him, Ghana does not have a legal system that the citizenry can be proud of because the GBA is not proactive.

“The GBA has been run in a lazy manner … they are not proactive in ensuring justice,” he said.

Mr. Darko observed that Ghanaians do not trust the judiciary anymore, adding that other law making institutions have lost respect for human rights in the country.

He therefore called for reforms of the Judicial system to improve justice delivery systems.

His comments come days after the GBA elected new executives to steer the affairs of the association.

A corruption expose by Anas Aremeyaw has prompted a judicial council to suspend 22 lower court judges while the Chief Justice is working to establish a prima facie case against 12 High Court judges who allegedly took bribes to influence cases on camera.

In a related development, eighty employees of the judicial service have also been identified for playing various roles in the scandal.

A statement signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Poku Acheampong on Friday September 18, mentioned that fifteen of the persons captured in the exposé by Anas and his Tigereyepi team, are employees of the prisons service, the police and the Attorney-General’s Department.
