Woman Convicted - For Abandoning Kids

BARBARA TEASE, the mother of two young kids abandoned on Monday night at the Abompe New-Site residence of Pastor Samuel Owusu of Christian Hope Ministry, has been remanded in police custody. The self-employed woman, who claims to be a native of Nzema in the Western Region, has been convicted and is due to be sentenced by an Obuasi Magistrate Court on September 3, 2009. Showing a lot of remorse for her crime, Barbara pleaded guilty to the charge of abandonment, contrary to section 96 of Act 29/60, leading to her conviction. Opening prosecution, Chief Inspector Daniel Kojo Amevor told the court presided over by Kofi Owusu Sekyere that on August 24, 2009 at about 8:30 pm, the complainant returned from a church service to discover Regina Kroson and Ruth Kroson at his residence at Abompe New-Site, a suburb of Obuasi. According to him, the following day, three-year-old Regina and her younger sister Ruth were brought to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi by the complainant, who subsequently made a report to that effect. Chief Inspector Amevor said the Obuasi Municipal Social Welfare was granted temporal custody of the two children whiles a local announcement was later made on Shaft 98.1 FM, to trace the mother. He intimated that on August 26, 2009, the accused, Barbara Tease resurfaced and was brought to the Tutuka Police station by the complainant, Pastor Samuel Owusu. After investigations, she was charged with the offence and arraigned before the court. The upsurge of abandoned children in the golden city and its surrounding communities in recent time has reached its crescendo, leading to lamentation by the Obuasi DOVVSU boss. In an earlier interview with DAILY GUIDE, she described the situation as appalling and disgusting to human dignity, cautioning young women not to give birth to children they could not take care of.
