16th Sep 2015 would forever be remembered as a sad day in the history of Ghana.

On that faithful day, members of Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) and Movement for Change (MFC) who participated in a planned picketing at the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC) calling for a new voters register, were literally whipped into line whiles scores of them were arrested for using unapproved routes by the police.

The police, clad in full riot gear resorted to brute force by using horse whips, batons as well firing tear gas canisters and water cannons on the demonstrators for allegedly using unapproved routes in their march.

For this reason, the demonstrators were unable to picket at the premises of the EC but vowed to do that in the coming days.

An Accra Circuit Court on 28th September, 2015 ruled in favour of Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) and granted them the permission to picket at the premises of the EC.

This was confirmed the Convener for the group, Mr. David Asante in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s Krokooko.

Hours after the court’s decision was made public, the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako pledged to bus volunteers from his region to swell up the numbers of protesters. Peacefmonline.com contacted his special aide Mr. Andy Owusu for further details.

According to him, preparations have already been made to bus hundreds of volunteers to join LMVCA in picketing the EC. “We have arranged for 20 buses and our decision to join in the exercise is to ensure we have a new register for the 2016 general election”, he said.
