Court orders the arrest of a salesman for alleged stealing

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday ordered the arrest of a salesman, Freeman Smith, for allegedly spending GH15,000 Cedis stolen cash for tithes and promoting the gospel of Christ. Freeman Smith failed to appear before the court to answer the charge of stealing the GH15,000 Cedis being proceeds of selling 12 motor bikes. Inspector Jubiok Michaels, therefore, sought for a bench warrant to arrest Smith. The facts as narrated by Inspector Michaels were that the complainant was Mr Emmanuel Frimpong, a businessman who deals in motor bikes at Caprice, Accra. In July last year, Mr Frimpong travelled to Japan and left his motor bike shop in the care of the accused. According to the prosecutor there were 36 motor bikes left in Smiths care but he only accounted for 24 and all efforts to recover the proceeds of the 12 motor bikes, proved futile. A report was therefore made to the police and during investigations, Smith stated that in February this year, Mr Frimpong called him from Japan on phone and during their conversation, he (Mr Frimpong) asked him whatever he (the accused) wanted. This prosecution said Smith misconstrued to mean that the items (12 motor bikes) were gifts for him. Prosecution said Smith, therefore, started using the proceeds on his church project, charity and tithes. According to Smith, he also used the proceeds to purchase household items and rented an apartment.
