Privatizing ECG Will Affect Consumers - Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed, an aspiring General Secretary of the People's National Congress (PNC), has condemned any attempt by government to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to him, privatizing ECG will ruin the fortunes of Ghana and may collapse Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, the PNC Policy Analyst noted that trading off parts of ECG's assets to private hands will overburden Ghanaian consumers because the prices of utilities may double.

A time will come when we will be unable to use essential service like electricity because of cost. The economy is crippling. If the economy was buoyant, you may not be very bothered about the cost of utilities that is about to increase when private entities begin to run because their prices are going to reflect market forces. And what that means is that you’re going to be paying market rates which will be over and above what we are currently paying. If care is not taken, it’s going to affect industry," he stated.

He however added that ECG can only be privatized if only it will inure to the benefit of Ghanaians.

Now the biggest motivation we can have at ECG is for us to make profit. Profit is going to be the driving force,” he added.
