The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Ahmed Mohammed Baba-Jamal, has appealed to teachers not to count their blessings by the quantum of their salaries and material things alone but also by the number of children they could help change into useful citizens. He said the government was aware that quality education could only be achieved if teachers, who are the implementers of policies in educational institutions, are well resourced and motivated. He said efforts were being made to improve the lot of teachers for them to reciprocate and give off their best for the country to achieve its educational objectives as early as possible. Mr Baba-Jamal was speaking at the opening of the Eastern Regional Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) clinic for boys and girls in basic schools on Monday. The one-week clinic is under the theme �Promoting quality science and technology education for sustainable national development.� He said Ghana was blessed with abundant natural resources yet the country was confronted with poverty because it lacked the requisite knowledge and skills to harness the natural resources. Mr Baba-Jamal said the country could overcome its development challenges only through application of science and technology and therefore investing in education especially in science, technology and mathematics is one of the most effective investments that could help improve upon the standard of living of Ghanaians. The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs Rene Boakye-Boateng, said based on the records that more girls were studying science than boys the Ghana Education Service initiated a policy to include boys in the STME clinics. She said participants in the clinic were selected from all the districts in the region and the aim of the clinic was to encourage the participants to take to the study of science. The Eastern Regional Manager of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Mrs Eunice Obeng-Yeboah who chaired the function, appealed to teachers to help find the key to the development of the country.
