Voters Register: What Else Do They Want From Prez Mahama Kwesi Pratt Queries

“If you listen to all of these people, it appears that the only problem without election is the voters register? Is that true…we make incredible argument and when those comments are made by adults and political leaders you have a serious problem” the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt said.

Kwesi Pratt was commenting on the controversies surrounding the voters register and the call by the opposition to change it.

President Mahama in an interview with journalists in France said "I have no right to interfere in that list (Voters register). Ghana has an Electoral Commissioner that is independent and does not consult the president to do anything. It is a relatively young register because we have only used it for only one election and it was a register that has been biometrically compiled… It is for the EC to decide what to do”.

However, the President’s comments were not welcomed by a section of the public.

Speaking to this, Kwesi Pratt wondered what President Mahama’s critics expected him to say. “….how do they expect the President to talk; that there is a new voters register? Does the President have the mandate to claim that there will be a new voters’ register? Or they expect the President to be behaving like the deputy ministers in the UK or we want the constitution to be violated?

“It seems to me that what they want simply is for all of us to shut up and accept what they are proposing without questions even if what they are proposing does not make sense. How can you run any country or institution like this where one segment of the society – even if they are in majority –when they speak no one else has the right to speak, when they come to conclusions we should all follow them like sheep. They say they want a new voters register so everybody shut up let’s go and get a new voters register” Kwesi Pratt stated in a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji.
