EC Should Set Campaign Period

2012 presidential candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has suggested that Ghana gets an official campaign period prescribed by the Electoral Commission (EC).

That, in his view, will ensure that political parties focus on governing the country.

In a facebook wall post entitled; “Campaign to develop Ghana OR campaign to win power,” Dr. Nduom wrote: “I suggest very strongly that we find a way to stop politicians and political parties from engaging in perpetual campaign to win power.

This never-ending, unbridled and costly political campaigning starts right after election results are declared and don’t stop until the next election.”

Dr. Nduom, who is a founder member of PPP, opined that since the 2012 election results were declared, some “men and women have not lifted a finger, raised a voice or searched their brains to find solutions to our many development problems. All they have done has been to attack their real and perceived political opponents so that they can win or retain power.”

He wondered when jobs will be created for young Ghanaians; communities cleaned and a way found to educate “all of our children to a minimum high school level” if we continue towards this path.

“How will we find the courage to create an independent prosecutor’s office that will fight corruption? We must resist the professional politicians who want power by all means and at all cost,” he urged.

“…a limited campaign period will help us to focus on development,” he added.

He therefore asked that an official campaign period be agreed on say three months before the election and suggested that the EC disqualifies “anyone who holds rallies, mounts billboards, etc., before this campaign period starts.”
