Kuznetsova Powers Into Round Two

Sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova brushed aside Germany's Julia Goerges to march into the second round of the US Open. Russia's Kuznetsova, the 2004 champion, was broken early in the first set but recovered to clinch a 6-3 6-2 victory. Ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki also made easy progress, with the Dane thumping Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva 6-4 6-0. World number one Dinara Safina opens her bid for a first Grand Slam title later on Tuesday when she takes on Australian teenager Olivia Rogwoska. Serbian duo Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, who have also topped the rankings in the last 18 months, are among the other star names to take to the Flushing Meadows courts on Tuesday. Jankovic, the fifth seed and last year's runner-up, plays Italy's Roberta Vinci, who has only won one singles match in six previous visits to the tournament. Ivanovic, seeded 11th, begins her campaign against Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine. Maria Sharapova, the 2006 champion, tales on Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova in the first night match under the floodlights on the Arthur Ashe Court.
