Case Against Afenyo Markin 'Dead On Arrival'

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Manhyia South constituency says the extortion case against Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo Markin is “dead on arrival”.

Mathew Opoku Prempeh opines that the claim is "just a bunch of lies" concocted by some members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) just to divert attention from the incompetence of the Mahama-led administration.

He comment comes after the Effutu MP was over the weekend arrested by the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a leaked tape implicating him for extortion over the Agriculture Development Bank’s IPO saga.

His arrest followed a petition filed by three National Democratic Congress (NDC) activists to the Inspector General of Police, the Criminal Investigation Department and seven other organizations to investigate the leaked tape.

Afenyo-Markin, who sought an injunction against the controversial ADB IPO, is alleged to have been bribed with $400,000 by some interested groups to back down from the writ he had filed at the Supreme Court to frustrate the planned IPO.

But Mathew Opoku Prempeh is convinced the arrest is just a ploy to intimidate Afenyo Markin.

“Afenyo has been winning cases against government so NDC members are envoius of him. He has at so many times disgraced government so they wnat to destroy him” he stated on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Tuesday .

The Manhyia South MP expressed shock at the interest the ruling party has in the case when in fact ADB has not complained of any missing money.

“Fire burn all those who want to disgrace Afenyo Markin; they can do worse but Afenyo will triumph becuase he has done nothing wrong.”

He said the NDC plan to scuttle the chances of the Effutu MP in the upcoming election by tagging him [Afenyo] as corrupt is an exercise in fuitility since “Afenyo is the darling boy of his constituents”.

Hon Opoku Prempeh urged the police to focus on their core duties of ensuring law and order and stop the witch hunting.

“Im not surpirsed about this because they did the same thing to me. Serious criminal cases need the police's attention and the 'I Care For You' government is rather concerned about political vendentta.”
