Sixty-four vehicles have been impounded by the police in Kumasi because they have defective headlights.
The drivers of the vehicles have been arrested and would be arraigned.
The vehicles were impounded after a two-week public education on the need for drivers to maintain their vehicles before putting them on the road. The education was done on the various radio stations by the Ashanti Regional Police Command, under the leadership of the Ashanti Regional Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye.
Briefing the Daily Graphic Tuesday, the Regional Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), Superintendent Frank Abrokwa, said motorists, drivers and pedestrians were being killed or injured by hit-and-run drivers.
He also said the police had realised that defective headlights constituted the leading cause of most of the hit-and-run accidents.
Drivers
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, some of the arrested drivers confessed that their vehicles had faulty headlights but pleaded with the police authorities to allow them to repair them.
Mr Richard Oduro, a trotro driver, admitted that he was driving with just one of his headlights in the night but said “that was my last trip. I wanted to go home and repair it the next day when they arrested me”.
