Massive Afforestation Programme To Commence In 2010

The Ministry of Lands, Forestry and Mines, is to embark on a massive afforestation programme from early next year (2010) in the country to conserve and expand forest reserves. A publicity machinery, to ensure extensive public awareness on the programme, is being worked on, and funding for the programme, is also being organized. The Deputy Minister of Lands, Forestry and Mines and MP for Buem, Hon Ford Kamel, made this known in an interview with Peace FM. He said ongoing programmes aimed at regaining forest cover in various parts of the country include supply of seedlings to communities. According to Hon. Kamel, the Northern Biodiversity Conservation Project, which is being funded by the World Bank, at a cost of 7.6million dollars, under the Global Environment Facility Programme, is also progressing steadily.
