The Deputy Commander of Motor Traffic and Transport Union (MTTU) in Accra, Superintendent Deborah Addison Campbell, has urged commercial drivers, especially trotro and taxi drivers, to cooperate with the police in order to reduce road accidents in the country.
She said the issue of lorry accidents is more serious in Ghana generally and Accra in particular, due to the high spate of indiscipline acts by some drivers in these areas.
Supt. Addison Campbell said Tema and Accra topped the chart on accident lists in the whole country, a trend, she described as rather alarming.
The MTTU Deputy Commander said these in an interview with Peace news in reaction to allegations that some MTTU police personnel, detailed to ensure driver disciple at the Circle-Odawna Space-buses lorry park, have been making arbitrary arrests and demanding monetary assistance.
The allegations leveled against the police by these trotro drivers at Circle are that after 7pm, Police unnecessarily harass them and sometimes even arrest them by claiming their lorry tires are worn out and in bad shape.
Supt Addison Campbell pointed out that any driver who has been wrongly arrested should do is to go to the police station and then to court for redress.
�Police personnel are also human beings just like you and I. They are not angels as there may be a few bad ones among us�if you feel you have been unfairly treated, make a formal complaint at any police station,� she said.
