The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has given the outgoing board of Kumasi Asante Kotoko three weeks to submit its report to Manhyia for a final decision to be made on who takes over the running of the club.
A source at the Manhyia Palace told the Daily Graphic Wednesday that Otumfuo had demanded the report to be ready today before making a planned trip outside the country.
But the source said the board, led by lawyer Paul Adu Gyamfi, asked for more time “to get everything ready” in three weeks.
Indeed, the Manhyia Palace, the seat of Asanteman, was a beehive of activities concerning Kotoko, as journalists besieged the place to get scoops from the closed-door meetings involving various factions of the club.
Immediately after meeting the board, Otumfuo also met with the Opoku Nti-led management and a section of the playing body, as well as some members of the technical team.
Also spotted emerging from the inner room of Manhyia Palace were Dr Kwaku Frimpong of Champion Divine Clinic and former Black Stars international, Samuel Osei Kuffour, both named as frontrunners to take over the club.
None of the officials who attended the closed-door meetings was ready to divulge any information or grant interviews to the media apparently out of fear of offending the Asantehene.
But a source said, “if Kuffour's proposed restructuring is to be adhered to, re-designating the board chairman's position as president, then it was likely he would be given the nod and Dr Frimpong could become his vice president.”
Despite an earlier comment by Kuffour on radio that he had been given the job, considering the number of high profile personalities who invaded Manhyia yesterday, the future direction of the club looks uncertain, particularly as Otumfuo himself has not officially commented on the matter.
