NSS Urged to Construct Hostels for Personnel in the Regions

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mark Woyongo, has appealed to the National Service Scheme (NSS) to consider the construction of hostel facilities in their investment budget for its personnel in the regions. He said once the NSS had come to stay it was imperative that they acquired such facilities to avoid the annual ritual of personnel using the lack of accommodation as the basis to refuse postings to remote parts of the country. Mr Woyongo made the appeal when the Director of the Scheme, Mr. Vincent Koagbenu, paid a courtesy to brief him about the operations of the scheme in the region, an official statement said. The Regional Minister acknowledged the contributions of the personnel of the scheme towards the development of the region and called for more personnel to fill the vacancies in the teaching and health sectors, explaining that these areas suffer most in terms of human resource. He appealed to the director of the Scheme to work out modalities to get motorbikes for personnel to enhance their work and to motivate them to accept postings to the region. For his part, Mr Koagbenu said the service would assign 25,000 personnel to serve the municipal and district assemblies throughout the country. He said efforts were being made to engage medical personnel such as doctors and medical assistants to serve in far to reach communities, especially in Northern Ghana, and entreated those posted to these areas not to reject the postings but accept them as part of their service to mother Ghana.
