Anas dominated the headlines for several weeks and gradually the euphoria is going down. Maybe the silence is to give our judges the peace of mind to properly investigate their peers and deliver justice or judgement as one of the affected judges puts it.
Sincerely, let’s face it the Anas investigation has brought with it a lot of humour. One friend sent me a nursery rhyme that goes like: “Judge judge Judge, will you take bribe agaaain, No no no, why why why, because Anas is watching, because Anas is watching, because Anas is watching”.
Interestingly patrons of chop bars don’t ask for goat again but rather judges. So people say give me 5 cedis of fufu and 20 cedis judge. People have composed songs for Anas and social media was very instrumental in spreading audios as well.
Just as Anas was jumping off the media spotlight, a popular highlife prodigy turned prophet surfaced. Ofori Amponsah has a lot of hits to his credit. He was seen as the future of the highlife genre owing to the fact that a lot of the younger musicians favour hiplife.
Some few years ago Mr. All4Real as he is known in music cycles told Ghana and the world he was quitting the genre to answer a higher call and also to pursue gospel. His decision was received with different reactions. I love his music and didn’t understand why answering a higher call could mean dropping ones God given talent.
Ofori Amponsah has made a “U” turn to his first love, highlife. His return has generated more heat than his conversion. He is alleged to have said on some media that he is prepared to perform in night clubs. He is also reported to have resigned from the church he founded as pastor to a member. Among the list of people chastising Mr. All4Real is his co-convert Lord Kenya who thinks something is wrong with him.
Perhaps Ofori is following in the footsteps of his God father and mentor Daddy Lumba, now DL. DL quit highlife and went gospel. Do you remember this song, “Menkwa na nyinaa mesom Jesus” meaning I will serve Jesus for the rest of my life. He is said to have taken this decision after recovering from a near fatal accident. He returned to highlife shortly after and released probably some of his best hits, Poison and Auntie Attah. Auntie Attah incidentally was the outdooring of Mr. All4Real. You can hear in that track” Now ladies and gentlemen welcome on stage Mr. All4Real.
Whiles we are quick to criticise converts who go back to the world we should also strive to find out what sends them back. I have heard stories of some converts and how difficult it was for them to stay in their new faith.
Do you remember Jesse Jones, Ghana’s Kirk Franklin? He could easily switch from Highlife to Gospel and vice versa. I hope you remember, “krom beye wode aa ene wobotom”. Meaning your enjoyment of life is your pocket.
Maybe Jesse offers the answer to the reason converts keep coming back. Could it be the lack of interest and investment in gospel music and related activities? Everybody needs money to enjoy life including our new converts.
