Confusion broke out in the Korley Korle constituency of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) between the two main contenders for the party’s parliamentary ticket, incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Nii Armah Ashietey and daughter of former President Rawlings, Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings and their supporters resulting in the trading of accusations and counter accusations of wrongdoing against each other.
Latest was a press conference held by a group that identified itself as the Friends of Nii Ashietey Armah (FONAA) on Monday morning addressed by a onetime close pal of the Rawlingses, Sacut Amenga Etego in which he among others accused Zanetor and members of her camp of what they termed as ‘deliberate and malicious attempts’ to discredit the works of their candidate since he became MP for the areas 7years ago.
Claims
To prove his point, Etego catalogued a number of projects he claimed Ashietey Armah has undertaken over the years which included the construction of a waiting area at Osu Government Maternity Home and a car park at Adabraka Polyclinic, provided boreholes for Ridge Hospital and Adabraka Polyclinic, provided water tanks for health facilities such as the Osu Government Maternity Home, Ridge Hospital and Adabraka Polyclinic, provided a generator set to the Osu Government Maternity Home, renovated a dental clinic at Adabraka and facilitated the training of some of his constituents as medical practitioners.
Sacut also talked about the registration of over 5,000 constituents for the National Health Insurance Scheme, the rehabilitation of a number of schools like the Osu Presby Boys Primary, Osu Presby Girls Primary, St. Thomas Primary, Osu Salem Basic School, Osu Presy Kindergarten, King Tackie Tawiah School, reconstruction of the Manhean Basic School in Osu, donation of container loads of assorted educational materials to various schools in the community including private schools comprising printers and other items and the disbursement of numerous scholarships and bursaries and a host of others.
Counter claims
But barely 24 hours later, the Zanetor camp also issued a statement hitting back at the incumbent MP and his boys, accusing them of desperately seeking to discredit the candidature of Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings.
In so doing, team Zanetor said “they attempted to throw dust into the eyes of right thinking Ghanaians by twisting facts and embellishing their statement with complete untruths.”
“If FONAA is so sure that Nii Armah Ashietey has brought so much development to the Klottey Korle constituency, and is capable of winning the NDC primaries, why make Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings the target of their vile attacks; why wouldn’t they allow the so called achievements to sell their preferred candidate?” They asked rhetorically since according to them, his works should speak for itself.
On the claims that Ashietey Armah rehabilitated a number of schools like the Osu Presby Boys Primary, Presby Girls Primary, Osu Salem Basic School, Osu Presby Kindergarten, King Tackie School, they indicated “this is a complete fabrication, no rehabilitation has been done by Nii Armah Ashietey” insisting that “the only thing he did was the provision of a water storage tank for the Osu Salem Basic School.”
Aside that, they said, “the Manhean Basic School was reconstructed by an NGO and commissioned by the Mayor of Accra” wondering who the beneficiaries of the supposed disbursed scholarships and bursaries were.
