We Can Never Have Perfect Elections Anywhere...Not Even In Church - Deputy Minister

A Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh says the New Patriotic Party is setting a 'bad precedent' in the country by calling for a new voters' register.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Hon. Mintah-Akandoh was emphatic the current voters' register is the best ever in the history of Ghana and so should be maintained.

According to him, a new register will not help to resolve election conflicts in the country if the nation doesn't advise itself to do the right thing.

Speaking to host Nana Yaw Kesse, the Deputy Minister was at sea about the essence of a new register.

In his earnest view, Ghana will keep compiling new registers every election year should the Electoral Commission succumb to the NPP's request.

“We are leaving a very bad precedent in this country that anytime that we go for general elections; we have to compile a new register. And when we’re screaming for another register, what we say is 'credible'. What is the guarantee that this one that we’re going to compile is also credible…Now this is the register we have and we say that is not credible? So we should go for another credible register. If care is not taken, we will not get a single credible register in this country."

Hon. Mintah-Akandoh further believed the NPP is hiding behind their petition to infiltrate the "stronghold" of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

And so the EC should maintain the current register because Ghana will never have a "perfect election," he insisted.

Let us be practical…In the history of Ghana, the register we have; it is the best so far. I am not saying that it’s perfect. And let us not deceive ourselves. We will never have a perfect election in any part of this world, not even in the church.
