Impeccable information reaching newsmen indicates that some activists of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Bibiani in the Eastern region have allegedly beaten to death a 55-year-old man in the area, in their attempt to forcibly take over a public toilet the deceased was operating.
According to sources, the thugs, numbering about eight, who demanded that all public toilets in the district be handed over to them immediately after the change of government, allegedly pounced on the man, known in the community only as �Kalala� on Wednesday August 26, 2009 and beat him mercilessly.
Kalala, who was said to be an activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and hailed from the Northern region, was reported dead last Friday and the body deposited at the Bibiani Government Hospital morgue.
An insider at the hospital confirmed that the body of a man whom the police confirmed was the owner of a public toilet at Bibiani had been deposited at the hospital morgue.
Daily Guide gathered that authorities of the hospital had planned to transfer the body of the deceased to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for autopsy because of the politics that had characterized the killing, an assertion a source at the hospital confirmed.
Narrating how Kalala met his untimely death in an interview with Daily Guide Frederick Batu, the constituency chairman of the NPP, said the deceased had legally acquired the public toilet and was operating it as a private business at Hwe na Ampro, a suburb of Bibiani.
He said immediately the NEC took over political power; some party activists in Bibiani and its surroundings demanded that all public toilets be handed over to them, including that of the deceased.
He continued that since Kalala purchased the toilet legally, he decease that he would only hand over the facility to the NDC activists when his money had been refund to him. Batu said on Wednesday August 26, at about 3.00 pm while Kalala was away, the NDC rioters went to take over the toilet from the one who was put in charge and when the deceased heard the information, he tried to retrieve what was legally his. In the process, Kalala was beaten cruelly with clubs and sticks, but the deceased managed to escape with the help of some onlookers. However, three days later, he died.
