Police Detain 76-Year Old Man Caught With Hard Drugs

The police have arrested and detained a 76-year old man caught with large quantity of dried leaves, suspected to be cannabis, at Offinso.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Edward Oduro-Kwateng, the Offinso Divisional Commander, gave his name as Kwabena Sarfo, and said, they acted upon a tip off.

He told a news briefing that the suspect, believed to have engaged in the hard drugs trade for decades, was found with five big parcels of the stuff.

He would be arraigned to answer for his crime as soon as they were done with their investigations, ACP Oduro-Kwateng, added.

Separately, the police have launched a massive manhunt for another suspected drugs dealer, Kwasi Manu, alias “Tagor” - aided to escape arrest by the youth of Koforidua near Offinso.

This was after a quantity of the dried substance and a pair of scissors had been found in his room.

The youth would not allow the officers to take him away, pelted them with stones and daring them to what would have been a bloody confrontation but for the tact displayed by the police.

ACP Oduro-Kwateng said the suspect took advantage of the confusion to flee.

He said one of those who hurled stones at the officers, Zakaria Iddrisu, was however seized and would be prosecuted for obstruction.

The Divisional Commander gave high marks to the neighbourhood watch committee at Abofour for the strong support it was giving to the police to clamp down on drugs peddling and other criminal activities in the area.

Through the assistance of the committee, five people were now been held for smoking and dealing in cannabis.

ACP Oduro-Kwateng warned the youth to desist from acts of lawlessness and impunity, saying, the police would act decisively to bring offenders to justice.
