Police Run Like Cowards!

An eye-witness on the day the slaughter of three people at Agbogbloshie says the initial reports that suggested that the killing took place in the market is a complete lie! According to the eye-witness, the crime scene was rather not only outside the trading facility but also in front of policemen who themselves took to their heels and sought for cover as guns and machetes started flying and blood flowing! The eyewitness (name withheld) who has been long time indigent of the Kokomba Market, told newsmen that the violence that took place was rooted in politics and greed and not tribal differences as the police have claimed. He said that the people perpetrating the violence today are people who stole other peoples items after they were chased out of the Kokomba Market following initial violence after the general election early this year. These perpetrators were afraid that when the owners of the stolen properties return, they will demand their properties from the thieves, so they were armed and ready to cause violence. I know and can identify all of them the eyewitness said. Giving the genesis of what happened at Agbogbloshie last Tuesday, he said that on the Friday before the historic Tuesday, a representation of the returning Agbogbloshie dislocated persons numbering about thirty sought audience with some officials of the NPP at the market especially Prince Kamel who has been declared wanted by the Regional Police Commander. He said Prince took him to the party headquarters where they were advised to report to the police. We elected one person to accompany Prince to the Jamestown Police Station under whose jurisdiction the Agbogbloshie Police falls. The delegation first met the Crime Officer before Distinct Commander, he emphasised. Bearing in mind the seriousness of the issue at hand the Commander led the issue hand the Commander led the young men to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander. He revealed that in the meantime six of them were tricked to come into the market for negotiations whilst Prince Kumal and others went to report to the police. When we got there they got up and started running only fo us to realize that we have been tricked into a trap as there was a sack full of cutlasses and weapons, he stated. He recalled how he overheard one of the attackers, Ayatu say in Dagbani, if they have returned, we wont spare them. He said that when others started throwing stones at them, they decided to run for shelter adding they were chased until they were stopped by personnel of a police patrol team who asked them to sit down. The mob was still coming after us and one of us (Alhassan) got up and went to police and told them to do something to help us but before we could say jack they got hold of him in front of the police and started beating him. At this point, the police who could not stand the massacre run away form the scene, he said. One of us, by name J.Y. also got up to defend his friend and I told him to stop but he ignored me, when they got hold of him too, the butchering started, he said. The rest of us took to our heels running for our dear lives, whiles some headed for the Sikkens area others (myself inclusive) too headed for the Amadi Cold Store area, he said. He said they were pursued by some twenty persons who appeared very hungry for blood and its Gods will that I am alive.
