Fishermen in Apam and its surroundings have appealed to the government to increase their weekly supply of pre-mix fuel of 3,000 gallons because it cannot meet their demands. The chief fisherman of Apam, Nana Kobina Caiquo, made the appeal on behalf of the fishermen, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Apam, on Wednesday. He said due to the safe nature of the landing beach at Apam most fishermen from Elmina, Moree, Biriwa, Chorkor, and other parts of the Central Region land there to sell their catch and refuel. Nana Caiquo said their weekly allocation woefully insufficient to meet their demand. �This has compelled most fishermen to buy super petrol and engine oil for fishing,� a situation he described as very expensive and unprofitable�. A governmental appointee of the Apam Co-operative Canoe fishermen Association, Mr Amo Appiah, who supervised the sale of premix supplied to the town, on Wednesday, said a weekly supply of about 12,000 gallons would be sufficient for them. Meanwhile, fishermen had a good harvest on Wednesday, with a crate of herrings being sold at GHC25.00.
