Two senior high schools upgraded to status of boarding schools

The Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School (SHS) at Saboba and the Chereponi SHS have been upgraded to the status of boarding institutions with effect from this academic year. Mr. Alex Tetteh-Enyo, the Minister for Education, said this at separate ceremonies at Saboba and Chereponi when he visited the two schools to inspect their infrastructure and other facilities. Mr. Tetteh-Enyo said the upgrading of the schools was part of government�s efforts to provide accessible and equitable education to Ghanaians. He expressed the hope that the change in status of the schools would help lessen the burden of students from the rural areas who search for accommodation in the district capitals to pursue their education. It would also reduce he headache of parents in providing food for their children when they are in school. The Minister urged all stakeholders in education delivery to take more responsibility in assisting to provide infrastructure and other facilities to enhance the status of the new schools. Mr. Alhassan James, Headmaster of the Saboba SHS, said the school was established in 1986 by the North German Bremen Mission in collaboration with the E.P. Church-Ghana. The school, which started with 45 boys and one girl, now has a student population of 448, comprising 338 boys and 100 girls, adding that it was absorbed into the public system in 1990. Mr. Adolf Ali, the Saboba District Chief Executive, said the upgrading of the two institutions showed political will and maturity on the part of the government. He said over the past four years, the district assembly and other decision-makers had lobbied for the upgrading of the schools to boarding status but to no avail.
