Head of Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says the Electoral Commission (EC) public forum on the voters register has turned out to be a ‘talk shop’.

According to him, an important issue such as a bloated voters register which has been a subject of controversy is not decided by mere talking, as is currently happening at the event.

The two-day event being moderated by five eminent personalities is to collate different views about the country’s register whose credibility is being questioned.

The entire participants-largely political parties and civil society – who have so far made presentation on their position, admitted that the current register has some anomalies that have to be addressed but the procedure of solving the problems remains divided.

The opposition New Patriotic Party insists electoral album is bloated and is calling for a new one ahead of the 2016 general elections; however the governing National Democratic Congress wants the existing register cleaned.

However speaking on Accra-based Neat FM, Dr. Amoako-Baah stated that forum cannot determine the merit in NPP’s case presented to the EC.

“Mere talking like is being done cannot decide the NPP’s case. You have to look at the evidence and scrutinize it thoroughly to determine how credible it is; if there is merit, then certainly action must be taken, but we are yet to do any such thing.”

The Electoral Commission is expected to make its presentation today, Friday 30th Nov.

But Dr. Amoako-Baah said he would be shocked if the EC takes a decision today as that will prove that the two day event was indeed “just a talkshow”.
