The Electoral Commission (EC) will soon respond to the New Patriotic Party’s(NPP) claims that the voters register is bloated.
The NPP at a forum on the voters register, reiterated their allegations of a bloated electoral roll. A former Chairman of the party, Peter Mac Manu said the NPP had cited names of about 13,000 Burkinabes in the country’s voters register.
This is in addition to the over 78,000 Togolese nationals it had earlier alleged were contained in the register.
But the Principal Director of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Sylvia Annor tells Citi News the Commission will respond to the said allegations.
“The Commission will respond to that… The NPP has said something about the EC with regards to the allegations it presented to it. Definitely the EC will react appropriately, as soon as practicable, the Commission will come out,” Sylvia Annor said.
The forum is expected to continue today as the remaining political parties and other civil society groups take turns to present their case to support or oppose calls for a new voters register.
Presentations made on the first day of the forum included the NPP’s former Chairman, Peter Mac Manu, who insisted that the current register is bloated.
For his part, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia dismissed the claims raised by the NPP describing them as ‘problematic and flawed’.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Progressive People’s Party, Kofi Asamoah Siaw advocated an effective National Identification System from which the voters register could be obtained and updated automatically.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei at the opening of the forum on Thursday assured that the Commission will decide on the best option for the country. She added that their work will be done devoid of any biases.
