The Chief Executive Officer of Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) Education Group, Mr Roger Ohemeng, Executive Officer of the Group, has debunked the notion that the programme is mathematically inclined.
The UCMAS Education medium is to help build children’s memory, concentration, speed and visualisation ability, Mr Ohemeng stated.
Speaking at the 6th UCMAS National Abacus and Mental Competition 2015, in Accra, Mr Ohemeng said, the UCMAS programme is a whole brain development programme.
He said from four to five years the human brain develops by 75 per cent and so UCMAS engages children from five - 14 years for the mathematics programme.
He said the children use a tool call the ‘abacus’ to massage their fingers, which activates their brain cells.
Mr Ohemeng said UCMAS would soon launch a programme called Expeed Maths which focuses on Junior high school (JHS) students.
He said the Expeed maths is a programme that is being tailored towards the education curriculum specifically the JHS mathematics.
Mrs Angela Tena Mensah, Accra Metropolitan Director of Education said in a speech read on her behalf that the UCMAS programme enhances the memory to reduce the over dependence on technologies such as calculator.
She said, the best way a child could learn is to engage the five senses and UCMAS programme captures all these aspects.
She commended UCMAS for training the children to be sharp in their brains, boost their confidence level and erase the mathematics phobia.
