Flood Alert: VRA and NADMO Warns 3 Regions

The Volta River Authority (VRA), says its sister company in Burkina Faso, SONABEL, is expecting excessive heavy rainfall in the month of September which could lead to possible spilling of water from their Bagre and Kopienga dams in the next few days. A press release on the flood alert signed by Abla Fiadjoe, Acting Director, General Services of the VRA, said the spilling of water may cause the White Volta to swell and overflow its banks which is likely to cause flooding. The statement advised residents and communities along the banks of the White Volta and Black River in the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions, to take precautionary measures to avoid being adversely affected. It named some of the likely areas to be affected as: Widana, Pusiga, Kulungugu, Bazua, Binduri, Nakoliga, Natinga and Voko all in the Bawku East District of the Upper East Region. Bukperi, Tako in the Gambaga District of the Northern Region. The rest are Gogo, Saka, Sapeliga, in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region and all the communities along the fringes of River Sissili, Wahabu and Kulun in the Upper West Region. "The Volta River Authority in collaboration with relevant institutions is monitoring the situation closely and will keep the public informed," the statement added. In a related development, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has also appealed to all communities living in the catchment areas of the Black and White Volta, the Sisala, Kulpawn River to move away from areas likely to be flooded due to the spillage from the Bagre Dam tomorrow, Friday 4th September, 2009, to avoid any disasters. "Equally, people living along the Volta Lake and other tributaries are reminded to take precautionary measures as these water bodies are likely to overflow their banks," NADMO said. A press statement signed by the National Coordinator, Mr. Kofi Portuphy, assured the general public that its monitoring team is on the ground to respond to any emergency situation.
