Adams Spirit Will Lead NPP To Victory -Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako has invoked the spirit of the late Upper East Regional Chairman, Alhaji Adams Mahama to lead the party’s onslaught, ahead of the 2016 general elections.

Chairman Wontumi, as he is popularly known, said he believes the spirit of the late Chairman will continue to support the party through thick and thin until Nana Addo is declared the President of Ghana.

Reminiscing on what he said was the late chairman’s unflinching commitment towards victory for the party, the NPP regional chairman said irrespective of what the Electoral Commission and the President Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) will do; Nana Addo will surely emerge victorious.

The NPP regional chairman, who was expressing his opinion on the outcome of the recent forum organized by the EC, following calls by his party for a new voters’ register, said the position taken by the chairman of the electoral body would be inconsequential to next year’s election.

“No matter what they do, Nana Addo will be President of this country,” Chairman Wontumi declared in an interview with the paper, stressing that the party would unite with a strong force to confront next year’s elections.

Chairman Wontumi further accused the President and the NDC of being behind the ongoing court suit filed against National Executive of the party by some members of THE NPP.

According to him, the President and the NDC are working behind the scenes in order to perpetuate disunity within the NPP, hence their decision to fund some elements within the opposition to cause mayhem. “I know President Mahama and the NDC are behind the latest suit but they will never succeed, no matter what they will do,” Chairman Wontumi declared.

He, however, pointed out that no institution, apart from the National Council, can overturn the decision taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC). Chairman Wontumi opined that any attempt to overturn the decision without resorting to the party’s laid down structures will not yield any results.

According to him, no court will reach a decision without taking into account the various provisions contained in the Constitution of the party for resolving grievances. “I believe the court will take into consideration whether these individuals have exhausted the structures within the party or not before giving judgment because every member of the party is subject to the Constitution,” Chairman Wontumi noted.

He continued that there had been instances whereby a decision by NEC had been overturned by the National Council, citing the case of the proposed affirmative action for female parliamentary aspirants, which was eventually overturned by the National Council.

Chairman Wontumi further cited himself as an example, explaining that when he was the Constituency Chairman for Bosomtwe, he was once suspended but upon petition to a higher body in the party, the decision was later reversed.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman however observed it is neither the NPP nor their executives who will bring the flagbearer of the party, Nana Akufo Addo to power but instead it is the majority of Ghanaian voters who have resolved to change the corrupt and incompetent administration of the NDC.

He, therefore, called on party supporters to exercise restraints and remain committed to the party. Chairman Wontumi observed that the NPP is bigger than any individual, adding that the exit of one single member will not have any bearing on the fortunes of the party.

“It is Ghanaians that will bring Nana Akufo Addo to power and not the NPP; we are only a political organization but the agents of change are the majority of Ghanaians who are suffering as a result of the incompetence of the NDC administration,” he noted.
