The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr. Robert Dwamena, has disclosed that the company recorded 25 electrical accidents involving its staff this year, due to inadequate health and safety measures.
According to him, out of the number, two fatalities and three assault cases were recorded in Western and Volta regions, aside vehicular accidents.
Mr. Dwamena, who was speaking at the national launch of the third ECG Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness Week on the theme: ‘Enhancing safety health and environmental consciousness at the workplace”, said it was the responsibility of management and employees of the company to ensure safe, healthy and accident-free environment.
The event sought to remind management and employees of the company of their commitment to safety and health measures.
The Red Cross Society demonstrated ways of ensuring safety of a victim in case of an emergency at the workplace or home.
Mr. Dwamena said ECG management would continue to put in place measures to ensure the safety of workers, stressing that ‘the death of one person in any form of accident is one too many’.
He said management would enforce the company’s standards operations procedure, transport policy and codes of practice.
Mr. Dwamena said, “‘It is, therefore, the responsibility of ECG officials at all directorates, regions, divisions, sections and districts to ensure strict compliance with all procedures and also the use of the personal protective equipment.”
He said: “ We must involve all directorates because different directorates play very important roles in ensuring the overall safety of employees and stakeholders of the company.”
Mr. Dwamena, however, asked the safety health and environment division of the company in particular to implement programmes, to ensure the safety and health of workers, adding that the ECG would sustain its training of workers.
The Eastern Regional General Manager for ECG, Mr Michael Baah, said that most accidents could have been avoided if risks assessment had been properly done.
The president of the Holy Family Hospital in Koforidua, Dr. Frederick Danso, appealed to the staff of ECG to adhere to safety measures in order to reduce electricity related accidents.
