Don�t Be Science Phobic: Minister

The Deputy Eastern regional Minster, Baba Jamal has urged girls across the country to shake their fear of science and mathematics-related courses. Mr Jamal gave this advice when he delivered a keynote address at the Regional Science, Technology and Mathematics Education Clinic in Koforidua. The programme was instituted in 1985 with the objective to encourage girls to pursue science and mathematics at the higher education level. This year�s clinic was attended by 735 participants made up of 210 males and 525 females. The Deputy Minister said the performance of girls in science and mathematics is a boost to sustainable national development thus there is the need to promote quality science and technology based education to attain middle income status as a nation. This he underscored could not be achieved when the role of education in development was under estimated hence government�s readiness to motivate school children to have the free mind to study. According to him, provision of free school uniforms, the increase of the capitation grant by 50% and building of classroom blocks are some motivation interventions government is undertaking to improve quality education. Mr Jamal said frantic efforts are being made to improve the welfare of teachers to enable them do their best in achieving quality education for national development.
