Let's Halt Diabetes Epidemic

Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mavis Ama Frimpong, has called on stakeholders at this year’s World Diabetes Day to help stop the spread of diabetes in Ghana.

Welcoming participants to the 2015 World Diabetes Day celebration at the Ascension Hall in Koforidua, the deputy Minister explained that the diabetes is one of the non- communicable diseases threatening the general wellness and development gains of the country.

“The growth and steady development of every nation depends largely on good health and the general wellbeing of the citizenry, we therefore need to gather the momentum, join hands as a nation and fight diabetes whose staggering figures are scarring everyone,'' she said.

She commended the National Diabetic Federation for the choice of the Region and lobbied the Federation to set up the first country dialectic-friendly centre in the Region.

On her part, the National President of the Diabetic Federation, Mrs. Elizabeth Esi Dedzor, said in every 30 seconds, someone loses his life to diabetes.

She appealed to government and the International Development Agencies to help establish a Diabetes Commission to regulate standard treatment protocols and coordinate activities of individuals and institutions for effective program implementation.

A Representative of President Mahama, Dr. Engman assured of government's commitment to halting the epidemic in the country.

He assured the participants that government will do all it can to make the objective of the Federation realized.
A Representative of WHO said development partners will continually supports the country with technical assistance to halt the Epidemic.
