Govt Secures $100m For Household Toilets In Accra

The government has secured a $100-million facility for the provision of household toilets in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama has said.

The construction of the toilets is expected to enhance sanitation in the national capital.

President Mahama said this in an interaction with the Ga Wulomei as part of his “Changing lives, transforming Ghana” tour of the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday.

The meeting afforded the President the opportunity to brief the spiritual leaders of the Ga State on what the government was doing to improve Accra's development and also hear from them some of their concerns about the state of affairs of Accra.

Sanitation challenges

Ghana has been struggling to win the war against open defecation, which is said to cost the country $79 million annually.

Accra is not left out of the despicable challenge, as many people still defecate in the open.

That development is attributable to many factors, especially the lack of toilets in many homes.

Accelerated development

President Mahama touched on development projects going on in Accra and said the government had kept faith with the people.

From roads to health, education, water, among other facilities, he catalogued the various projects the government had undertaken in Accra.

Cooperation

He commended the traditional authorities for the support they had given the government and reiterated that he would never let them down.

Concern

A representative of the Wulomei, Numo Blafo, expressed concern over the elimination of libation from state functions and called for its restoration to give meaning to Ga traditions and norms.

He also commended the President for the many development projects the government had undertaken in Accra.
