The erstwhile Lecce frontman claims Ghana-based players should be worthy of their call-ups to the national side.
Former Ghana striker Kwame Ayew has condemned calls for the introduction of local players’ quota into the Black Stars.
Head coach Avram Grant has been constantly chastised for his continues neglect of home-base players – a situation that has led to public clamour for a specific quota for Ghana-based players.
In Grant’s 23-man squad for the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers double header with Comoros, WAFA’s Samuel Tetteh was the only outfield player on the list, in addition to goalkeepers Fatau Dauda and Richard Ofori.
“You can’t call four, six or seven players from local teams for the national team,” Ayew, younger brother of Abedi Ayew and uncle to Andre and Jordan Ayew, told Starr FM.
“It’s not because they are not good. They are good but the thing is, should they be picked if there are better players abroad?
“We shouldn’t do things like it is in South Africa where there is a quota for black players in the rugby team.
The former Sporting Lisbon frontman also shed some light on his nephews’ performance in the English Premier League.
“I am very proud of Dede [Andre] and Jordan,” he said.
“It is overwhelming. I am even more proud than their dad and mum. The Ayew family is God-sent because there is no football family like us.
“They have continued from where we left off. I was supposed to go and watch Aston Villa versus Swansea in Birmingham. I couldn’t go due to some commitments but I will be there in January to watch them.”
Andre and Jordan hold a total of eight goals between them with the former accounting for six.
