Some dismissed teachers of the Akwamuman Senior High School (SHS) in the Eastern Region have petitioned the Director General of the Ghana Education (GES) over what they described as “unfair and sudden” transfer of teachers in the school.
According to the teachers (name withheld), they have been unduly transferred from the school even though the school is currently understaffed.
“Mr. Director General and Madam Minister of Education, we plead that you come to our aid and treat us fairly because we are being punished for no wrong done,” they appealed.
They pointed out in their petition that “We believe we are being victimized because though we are told that we are overstaffed for that matter our services are needed in other schools, two key teachers (Physics and Chemistry) are being transferred from the Science Department which is already understaffed.”
“We are convinced that we have been victimized because though the Headmaster says the school is overstaffed, he has employed new Social Science teachers when he assumed office.”
According to the petition, a copy which is in custody of the DAILY GUIDE, “On the 10th and 13thNovember 2015, close to the end of the first term of 2015/2016 academic year, another sudden transfer without due diligence has been effected.”
The transfers, according to the aggrieved teachers, are being done indiscriminately, sometimes coming unawares leaving little room for proper preparation, “and that makes us believe that we are being treated unjustly as per the GES conditions of service.”
They have therefore called for the Headmaster of Akwamuman SHS and his Assistant Head for Academics and the Regional and District Directors of the GES to be called “to order to stop transferring teachers in the course of an academic term.”
Furthermore, they have appealed to the Director General for “a free and fair rationalization timetable to be drawn for the school so that teachers can plan adequately towards their relocation if indeed we are overstaffed.”
