The police in Accra have arraigned a drinking spot attendant before court for reportedly selling Akpeteshie, local gin, laced with substance suspected to be Indian hemp to her customers.
The accused, Irene Nyemebuo, trader was purportedly arrested with the substance at her drinking spot on November 19, 2015 at Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector K. Adu, the accused person supplied narcotics contrary to Sections 6 (1) of PNDC Law 236/60.
Irene, who appeared before an Accra Circuit Court, presided over Aboagye Tandoh, denied the charge and was remanded into police custody until December 8, 2015.
C/Insp. Adu said at about 10am on the said date, the Mile 7 District Police, led by Superintendent T. K. Hlormenu, conducted a search at the premises of the accused person’s drinking spot, ‘James Town’ at Ofankor.
He said the police discovered a sack containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at the spot.
C/Insp. Adu stated that the substance and the drinks were impounded by the police, stating that Irene, upon interrogation, said the substance was given to her by a man to sell for him.
She however failed to lead the police to the unidentified man.
