The wife of Major Kenneth Akibate, a Marshal of the Pan-African Parliament on Saturday, was attacked by armed robbers at their residence here at Midrand, a suburb of Pretoria, South Africa.
The attackers made away with an unspecified amount of money, phone, passport, driver’s licence, documents, house and car keys and other valuables.
Mrs Akibate, the Marshal’s wife, said she was apparently trailed by the armed robbers to the house, after she visited a bank at Sandridge Shopping Centre at the Midrand neighbourhood.
The robbery which happened at 12:30 p.m. local time is under investigation by the Midrand Police in Pretoria.
The couple have relocated into a hotel, while the security agencies are taking steps to review the security of the area.
Major Akibate, who until 2006 was the Marshal of Ghana’s Parliament told The Ghanaian Times that, he was at home waiting for his wife, when the incident happened on her arrival.
He said his wife drove home safely and opened the remote controlled garage and parked inside the house, “then she sat in the car for the garage to close behind her, only to notice the garage door shaking.”
The Marshal said his wife told him one of the robbers squeezed into the garage after overpowering the private security at the gate, and ordered his wife at gun point to hand over to him all her things, which she did.”
According to Major Akibate, the armed robber asked whether there were people in the house and she answered in the affirmative, so the armed robber fled with the booty into a parked Honda car, and sped off.
Major Akibate said “my wife then run into the house and called me but when I rushed out to the gate, I saw two guys and a lady fleeing; we called in the Midrand Police, but it was too late.”
The Marshal told The Ghanaian Times that he suspected the Teller at the bank might have given the armed robbers a tip off and address of his wife when she went to transact business at the bank.
The couple, though traumatised are doing well here in Pretoria.
The Republic of South Africa is touted as the world’s most unsafe place to live with its high crime rate which the security agencies are grappling to deal with.
