Mrs Mariam Salifu, President of Mothers Club, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) on Monday called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to enforce the compliance of sanitation laws in the Ayawaso East- Sub Metropolis. This she said would help check reckless disposal of refuse, which had led to the heaps of rubbish, which were a common site in almost every community in the Sub-Metro. Mrs Salifu made the call at a meeting with chiefs and religious leaders at Mamobi in Accra. It was under the Community Sanitation and Health Improvement Project of the NGO in collaboration with Legal Resource Centre, another NGO and the European Union. It was aimed at finding solutions to the sanitation problems facing Mamobi and Nima communities. Mrs Salifu indicated that the sanitation problem was not only causing poor health in the communities but also affecting educational standards. She suggested the formation of a sanitation task force in the localities to help the AMA in tackling the issue. Mr Lionel Quarcoo, Sub-Metro Environmental Officer said unless Ghanaians had a change in the approach towards sanitation, the problem would continue to be debated without solution. He called on the communities to help the AMA in the phasing out of the pan latrine system by 2010. Mr Daniel T. Addo, Ayawaso East District Cleaning Officer of Zoom Lion Ghana Limited said the company would begin a pilot programme, which would make it possible for a vehicle to go round every household and collect refuse for a fee. He expressed the hope that the communities would embrace the idea, which would help ease the sanitation problem.
