Hasaacas Striker Samuel Afful Admits World Cup Snub Affected His Career

The Hasmal striker has revealed he was demoralized after missing out on Ghana's final squad to participate in World Cup.

Sekondi Hasaacas striker Samuel Afful says he suffered emotional and psychological problems after he was excluded from Ghana squad that participated at the 2015 World Youth Championship held in New Zealand.

The 20-year-old, who scored the winning goal against Zambia in the African Youth championship to hand Ghana the ticket into the quarter-finals, could not make Sellas Tetteh's final squad.

“I was very disappointed when I found out that I would not be part of the team to represent Ghana,” Afful told Kyzz FM.

“Almost all the players were monitoring various websites to check if their names were in the final list. Some reports had my name while others excluded me but the list was officially called out by the technical team and I wasn't included,” he added.

Afful admitted he could not concentrate in games after returning to the country

“I could not sleep that night while in Ghana because I was very disappointed. I couldn't concentrate during league games even at club level but my coach [Yussif Basigi] motivated me to overcome it.”

Ghana were eliminated in the round of 16 following a 3-0 drubbing by bronze medalist Mali after an impressive start.

Afful scored seven goals last season in the league and provided five assists to help Hasaacas finish 7th on the log with 42 points.
