Retired national stars who came close to winning the AFCON trophy in 1992 will lace up their boots once again to take on Kumasi Asante Kotoko in a friendly game at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The game, organised by the Despite Group of Companies, will bring to a climax the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Ghana's 1965 AFCON victory in Tunisia and is aimed at raising funds for the 10 surviving members of that team. Among the 1992 AFCON squad who have vowed to upset the newly crowned SWAG champions, Kotoko, are Sarfo Gyamfi, Kofi Abbrey, Emmanuel Ampeah, Stanley Aborah and Prince Opoku Polley.
Speaking at a press conference last Wednesday to herald the match, Sarfo Gyamfi urged Ghanaians to be a part of the fund raising effort by coming to watch the game in their numbers.
He assured that in spite of their ages, the 1992 AFCON gold medallists would offer the SWAG champions a stiff competition with the view of entertaining soccer fans who would troop to the Accra Sports Stadium to witness the encounter.
The game will also afford the SWAG champions the opportunity to claim another pre-season victory as they await an uncertain start to the season.
The Greater Accra chairman of the Kotoko support wing, Michael Boamah, said the match would offer Coach David Duncan the opportunity to test his new players against the experienced former national stars.
Among the new faces expected to make a case for inclusion into the Porcupine Warriors first 11 are Ernest Sowah, Halipha Sedogo, Samuel Kyere, Michael Yeboah, Theophilus Nyame and Edwin Tuffour Frimpong.
Mr Boamah also urged all Kotoko supporters based in Accra to throng the stadium to catch a glimpse of their new signings as there would also be a registration of fans at the venue.
