UBA Donates Books To SHS Schools Under The �Read Africa� Initiative

The United Bank for Africa and renowned Ghanaian author, Ama Atta Aidoo have donated books to two Senior High Schools in Accra under the Read Africa initiative.

The event, first in Ghana is an initiative that intends to create a dynamic educational platform for future generations through reading.

The beneficiary schools of the latest work of the ‘Marriage of Anansewaa’ writer are; Accra Academy School and Accra Wesley Girls High School both at Kaneshie.

Managing Director of UBA Ghana, Mrs. Abiola Bawuah and Obi Ibekwe, Executive Director, Resources, UBA Group donated the books titled “The Girl Who Can” and other stories on behalf of UBA Group and Ama Atta Aidoo who was present at the occasion.

Obi Ibekwe who read the speech on behalf of UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu said he is a profound believer in the power of words; both to inform and transform.

“It is through reading that we gain greater understanding which in turn leads to better insights and solutions both in our everyday challenges and the larger ones we are currently facing in the world,” he said.

He said Read Africa is one of UBA Foundations’ flagship activities that encourages young people to not only read books of all kinds, but also explore and shape their own narratives.

“To the young people gathered here today; I implore you to read widely and voraciously. Knowledge and its pursuit should be a lifelong activity that continues to enrich one’s life….”

‘Read Africa’ is an initiative of UBA Foundation geared at rekindling the dwindling reading culture amongst African youths.

Conceived and introduced in 2011, by the Foundation, the project involves the provision of recommended English literatures for junior and senior secondary schools students across Africa continent.
