Mr. Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Dormaa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has appealed to community leaders and other stakeholders to create the atmosphere that would engender the full development of the youth.
�In present day circumstances, posterity will demand answers from us if for our negligence and parental irresponsibility we fail to prepare the youth adequately for the leadership task ahead of them,� he said.
The MCE was addressing a day�s capacity building workshop at Dormaa Ahenkro facilitated by the Dormaa Municipal Office of the Department of Social Welfare and the Labour Department.
The workshop was attended by members of the Community Child Protection committees that are working towards the elimination of worst forms of child labour in 10 cocoa growing settlements in the municipality.
Mr. Oppong Asamoah charged the committees to co-ordinate their activities to ensure that the best interests of every child in the municipality were upheld and protected.
Mr. Sulley Salifu, Municipal Labour Officer, appealed to cocoa farmers to consider child labour on cocoa farms as a national challenge, saying the issue could spell the doom of the industry.
He urged cocoa farmers to be conscious of laid down definitions when determining who a child was, as well as the difference between child work and child labour.
Mr. Owusu Sekyere, Municipal Social Welfare Officer, commended the municipal assembly for its continued support for the programme to yield the necessary impact on the target communities.
The participants were exposed to details of the national programme for the elimination of worst forms of child labour in the cocoa industry and the hazardous activity framework.
They are expected to use the knowledge they acquired at the workshop to monitor and identify incidents of child labour and abuse in their communities and to advise offenders against the acts.
